About Sleep Medicine

Dental Sleep Medicine is a branch of dentistry that combines sleep study with the research and use of oral appliances and oral surgery for the treatment of sleep disordered breathing. Through SADI, dentists offering dental sleep medicine as part of their practice receive training so they can work directly with patients, as well as learn about oral appliances and the role they play in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders. Recently, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine issued new guidelines that identify oral appliance therapy as an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea for patients with mild to moderate cases of obstructive sleep apnea or when continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is not a viable treatment option. SADI supports these new guidelines highlighting the benefits of oral appliance therapy, and seeks to raise awareness of its member dentists who are trained to treat obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy.
